Spirit. It's a crucial element in any show that attempts to be as broad-ranging as the 70th birthday celebration the Hollywood Bowl threw for Herbie Hancock [ tickets ] on Wednesday night (9/1).

All the right guests were on hand -- musicians he had worked with for four decades and the folks who appear on his latest album -- and the material was equally expansive and inclusive, covering nearly every phase of his career from the early 1960s to today. Spirit, which was abundantly evident, was the key. ...continued

Ryan Bingham [ tickets ]'s name recognition skyrocketed when he won the best song Oscar for his work on "Crazy Heart" with producer T Bone Burnett, with whom he is reunited on "Junky Star." Bingham's first two records were made with former Black Crowe Marc Ford at the helm and their sonic sprawl -- amps-to-11 rockers, campfire tales and everything in between -- positioned the singer/guitarist as multi-faceted but not necessarily focused.

Burnett allows Bingham to retain his wide-ranging scope while controlling the wilder elements. The two Texans look to their brethren for direction -- there's a lot of Steve Earle in the vocals and James McMurtry in the lyrics, an openness in the overall sound. The dozen songs on "Junky Star" are rooted in the blues, either in the finger-picked or slide guitar: "Direction of the Wind" runs through the same blues filters Bob Dylan uses; "Lay My Head on the Rail" is Bingham's homesick blues; and in the midst of ominous percussion sounds on "Hard Worn Trail," gentle Delta blues are used as a musical contrast to the song's doom-and-gloom tone. ...continued

The middle third of Norah Jones [ tickets ]' set at the Greek Theater Wednesday (8/25) provided a radiant glimpse of her current state of mind. In a six-song block, she ventured from "Chasing Pirates," the most popular track on her recent album "The Fall," to songs by Neil Young, Willie Nelson and Hank Williams.

The sixth song in the string was "Back to Manhattan," a moment of romantic resignation on "The Fall," a solemn soliloquy in concert. In retrospect, it became a mood killer. (More on that later). ...continued

Hailing from Vancouver, the trio Pacifika [ tickets ] expands their horizon beyond a downtempo dream-date soundtrack. The three performers tap their ethnic backgrounds -- Spanish island culture mostly -- to create an alluring blend of folk styles and electronic effects. "Supermagique" is a perfect cocktail-hour disc.

While they have gone more dancefloor than spa in places -- especially in the pump of the barrio bassline in "Chocolat," a brazen attempt to secure a hit with a appeal to fans of NPR and J-Lo -- they are at their most convincing in the slower material. ...continued

Jeff Buckley discovered Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," deflated the original's production and created a sparse anthem. Rufus Wainwright [ tickets ] recorded it for "Shrek" and, like James Taylor taking on Carole King's "You've Got a Friend," he may well find himself having to sing someone else's song for the rest of his career.

It was the only song requested from the audience at Wainwright's show at the Greek Theater (8/20). The word "hallelujah" emerged from the silence between songs in his song cycle "All Days Are Nights: Songs For Lulu" and he ignored it; the second time was a more deliberate shout early in the second half of the night. He referred to the request as being "so L.A." ...continued

Surrounding themselves with a court of crack musical support, the Dukes of September -- Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs and Steely Dan's Donald Fagan -- kicked off a national tour Thursday (8/19), bringing their Rhythm Review to the Ives Concert Park in Danbury, CT.

The trio of frontmen played it smart, opting to run the more than two-dozen songs they performed in a non-stop, two-hour set. The continuity and quick transition between songs also helped to energize the predominantly over-40 audience, even when individual selections downshifted into slower or bluesier arrangements. ...continued

Darker My Love [ tickets ] debuted their new album "Alive As You Are" in its entirety in front of a rapt and attentive audience at Los Angeles' tiny Bootleg Theater Tuesday (8/17). Stripped down and sonically pure, gone are the shimmering feedback heavy freakouts so prevalent on their previous two releases.

"Alive As Your Are" sounds as if it was recorded in a VW bus somewhere in Humboldt County in 1969. Earthy, textured, and hook laden, it veers more toward the soundscape occupied by contemporaries such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and My Morning Jacket, but carries all the seriousness of vets like Wilco. ...continued

The focus was on guitarists during Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers [ tickets ]' Tuesday night (8/17) show at Hartford, CT's Comcast Theatre with Crosby, Stills & Nash [ tickets ] -- and not exclusively for good reasons.

Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell quickly became the focus because of an apparent problem with his amplifier rig. As the 9:30 p.m. start time for Petty advanced past 9:45 and closer to 10, a cluster of technicians and roadies continued to work behind Campbell's stack, feverishly trying to make it work. ...continued
